As a child, I was known for my selective taste in clothing, which led my grandmother to tell my mom, “I would never let a two-year-old dictate what she will or won’t wear.” However, my perspective shifted dramatically the moment I encountered the formidable fashion opinions of my own daughter. If she’s forced to wear something she dislikes, she can obsess over it for hours. I once witnessed her holding a cardigan closed for an entire afternoon to hide a cute white shirt, claiming it was “too straight.” Here are a few of the many reasons my three-year-old insists on changing her attire throughout the day:

  1. There’s a bone on it. (a bow)
  2. A friend borrowed the sweatshirt and now it feels too hot.
  3. These pants aren’t bouncing high enough.
  4. This coat tickles her neck when she swallows.
  5. She forgot that jeans aren’t for her legs.
  6. Halloween-themed shirts are just too spooky.
  7. These tights feel like they’re choking her feet.
  8. Her brother breathed on her.
  9. She recalls an old tag on this shirt that’s been cut out, but the bad memories linger.
  10. These shoes don’t allow enough “dancing.”
  11. This dress feels sad to her.
  12. She received a stamp in gymnastics on her arm, so she can’t wear anything that might touch it.
  13. Her brother said she doesn’t look like a superhero.
  14. The owl on her pajamas was staring at her in bed.
  15. She simply can’t remember why.
  16. The purples aren’t purply enough, the sparkles lack sparkle, and the stripes aren’t stripy enough.
  17. There’s a single drop of water on it.
  18. She saw a picture of herself in her favorite dress and must wear it because she hasn’t seen it since yesterday.
  19. The bottom of this outfit is just “crazy.”
  20. Her socks are too heavy for her shoes.
  21. There must have been a mix-up; she clearly requested a “princess party dress.”
  22. There’s a hole (though there isn’t).
  23. This top always lives in the drawer (it does).
  24. It won’t go on the right way (it will).
  25. This elastic waistband is hurting her feelings.
