I have a deep admiration for empowered women—those ambitious, intelligent, and determined individuals who refuse to be held back. There’s a common misconception that strong women are only found in corporate settings, shattering glass ceilings while the rest of us linger at home. That notion is simply not true.
Strong women are present everywhere in our lives. I often find myself pausing in awe as I witness a woman in a parking lot or a waiting room, asserting her authority. Whether she’s managing her child’s behavior or deciding to leave a situation that no longer serves her, strong women know when to move on.
These women maintain eye contact, even when faced with condescension. If a man approaches with a disrespectful “Hey, baby,” she stands her ground and firmly responds, “BACK UP.” I observe them at gas stations, pharmacies, and gyms—fierce in a multitude of ways—mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. When fear tries to grip a strong woman, she acknowledges it and pushes through. They confront fear head-on, understanding that if they allow it to immobilize them, life will overwhelm them.
Strong women pursue their passions while balancing family life. They drop their kids off at daycare and tackle work challenges from their offices. They may engage in quiet multitasking or assert themselves in boardrooms. They craft, or they don’t. They may be single mothers so utterly exhausted that they feel they can’t go on, yet they persist because their responsibilities demand it. These women carry heavy loads, but their struggles don’t define them. Often, their challenges remain hidden, as they refuse to wallow in self-pity. Instead, they forge ahead, determined to succeed.
These women volunteer their time, energy, and love, serving as the backbone of their families. They smooth sweaty brows, tend to scrapes, scrub burnt meals from pans, and fold laundry, even when their efforts go unnoticed. The strength of women is foundational to society; without them, there would be no community.
What distinguishes strong women from the rest is their resilience. They push through adversity when others might falter, driven by a depth of character and an indomitable will. Regardless of the scale of their responsibilities, they excel. These women make the best friends, as they know who they are and refuse to tolerate nonsense.
A memorable example is my friend Lisa, who faced an alarming situation in a parking lot early one morning. A man attempted to steal her purse, but she bravely fought back, using her high heel to defend herself until help arrived. When she returned to work, every woman in the office applauded her courage.
At this stage in my journey, I seek to surround myself with women who inspire and uplift me. Life can be challenging, and we must confront our battles with heads held high and shoulders back, preferably linked with a friend who can bolster us when we grow weary of the fight. Together, we can conquer.
