After welcoming my daughter into the world, I returned to work just three months after her birth. The following six months were a whirlwind of emotions; while I felt immense joy and fulfillment, I often found myself pondering a career change or simply wanting to escape. Just when I thought about making significant changes, an exciting opportunity arose at a company that felt like the perfect fit. Suddenly, the prospect of an interview filled me with both dread and exhilaration – “Oh no, I actually have to be interviewed?!” and “Here I come, world!”
I dove into preparation. I researched the company extensively, explored their website, and googled everything I could find. I focused on self-care – getting enough sleep, eating well, and even exercising. I treated myself to a fresh haircut with highlights, spending a little more than I should have (which led to a week of cereal dinners for my husband and me). I meticulously selected my outfit, seeking advice from my most fashionable friends. It was going to be the perfect ensemble.
Then came the morning of the interview.
Here are my hard-won lessons that I hope resonate with other new mothers:
- Arrange Childcare in Advance: Make sure to drop your baby off at their preferred childcare before starting your own preparations. I foolishly kept my little one at home, trying to balance her needs with my own. Of course, that was the day she attempted a daring leap off the bed and decided nap time was for singing, leading to a chaotic morning filled with her wails. It was a tough battle to get ready while managing a baby.
- Don’t Delay Your Preparations: Avoid the temptation to postpone makeup or other last-minute tasks until right before the interview. I thought I had plenty of time and planned to do my makeup in a Starbucks bathroom after grabbing a coffee. Instead, I ended up with a makeup disaster when my concealer exploded in my bag. This resulted in a frantic application session in the parking lot of an Office Depot, racing against the clock with only minutes to spare.
- Pumping Plans for Nursing Moms: If you’re breastfeeding, ensure you pump before leaving home and double-check that all pump parts are with you. Forgetting the power cord at work meant I had to milk myself at the kitchen sink, still dressed in my interview outfit, which was quite the reality check.
- Pre-Plan Your Route: Map out your journey the night before. Trusting your phone’s GPS can lead to disaster, especially when it fails at critical moments. I found myself lost and racing against time, all while worrying about my undone makeup.
- Take a Moment to Breathe: The anticipation of your first interview can feel overwhelming, almost as if it’s your only chance for a lifeline. However, remember there will be many opportunities ahead. You possess unique talents and capabilities beyond just being a caregiver. Embrace your worth, and approach each interview with confidence.
As Florence and the Machine would say, Shake It Off and confidently be your incredible, intelligent self. One interview, one breath at a time.
