Everyone from healthcare professionals to friends and family will tell you that every pregnancy is unique and beautiful. And while it is indeed a miraculous experience to nurture a new life, the first trimester can also feel like an endurance test.

Whether you’re a man or a woman, if you’ve interacted with someone in the throes of their first trimester, you’ll likely recognize some of the struggles that make this period particularly tough.

Morning Sickness: The Misleading Name

Morning sickness sounds innocuous enough, doesn’t it? You might envision a mild queasiness that’s easily remedied with a few crackers. But for many, this is far from reality. It’s a cruel joke that this term even exists. Morning sickness can strike at any moment—empty stomach, full stomach, feeling fine or not. The unpredictability is maddening, and the medications often fall short. I’ve tried acupuncture, ginger, various foods, and even prescriptions. Ladies, if you’re hit with this sickness, brace yourselves. But hey, at least it’s a sign of a developing baby, right?

The Myth of the Pregnancy Glow

You’ve probably heard about the so-called pregnancy glow—the radiant aura that supposedly envelops expectant mothers. In reality, this glow might be nothing more than a myth, especially if you’re battling morning sickness. Instead of glowing, you may find that people remember you for your tired, puffy eyes and green complexion. So, don’t hold your breath waiting for that glow; it may not make an appearance.

Hormones Gone Wild

Along with the nausea and lack of glow, you might notice unwanted breakouts and skin changes. Staring at the mirror, you might think your teenage acne days were behind you. Surprise! Pregnancy hormones are at play, wreaking havoc on your skin. Aside from keeping your face clean and hydrated, there’s not much you can do but ride it out. The silver lining? This phase doesn’t last forever.

Uncontrollable Tears

Get ready for a rollercoaster of emotions. You might find yourself crying for reasons that range from the absurd to the trivial. Once the floodgates open, it can be hard to rein in those tears. This emotional upheaval is just part of the experience, so keep tissues handy. Don’t forget to embrace the miracle of life, even when it feels overwhelming.

The first trimester is undoubtedly the most challenging phase as your body adapts to significant changes. Sure, discomfort and waddling are still to come, but take it one step at a time. Eventually, you’ll find some relief as your hormones stabilize and you adjust to this incredible journey.

In summary, while the first trimester may be riddled with discomfort and emotional highs and lows, it is a necessary phase of growth for both you and your baby.
