Recently, I had a surprising realization while preparing lunch for my children. Despite their ages—almost 11 and 13—I still find myself treating them as if they were much younger. As a mom who often feels like she’s still a kid at heart, I’ve struggled to fully embrace their growing independence. Here are six ways I continue to coddle my “big kids”:

  1. I still peel their oranges. Seriously, what am I thinking?
  2. I pour their milk. Honestly, who even drinks milk at this age?
  3. I turn on my son’s shower to warm up the water for him. Really? He’s nearly a teenager!
  4. I take a whiff of them as they walk by to ensure they don’t smell. I know, it’s a bit odd.
  5. I fawn over them when they get a scratch. Come on, just grab a band-aid!
  6. I serve my son’s food. This is something you do for pets, not for kids who are ten!

But today marks a turning point. I can proudly say that I packed unpeeled oranges in their lunches. Baby steps towards independence!
