10 Thoughts That Cross My Mind When My Kids Step on Their Toys

In the past month, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve stepped on a toy lurking near the stairs, beside furniture, or hidden in the carpet. It’s remarkable how adept little ones are at scattering toys in such a way that only the arch of my foot can discover them. I never imagined that parenting would involve dodging Light Bright pegs waiting to ambush me.

I do my best to tidy up as I navigate through the house. After all, I want to avoid injury as I approach middle age, but it’s a huge task, and I can’t always spot that tiny plastic dinosaur before it finds me first. Sure, my kids help with cleaning, but their idea of tidying typically involves moving throw blankets from one couch to another rather than actually picking up the toys. My warnings like, “If you don’t grab that Lego piece, it’s bound to end up underneath your foot,” fall on deaf ears. They just giggle, knowing that only I seem to suffer from such mishaps.

When my kids do step on their toys, it’s hard to keep from expressing the multitude of thoughts racing through my mind. Here are ten of those thoughts:

  1. I told you so!
  2. Ouch! That must hurt!
  3. Woohoo! (Accompanied by a little victory dance).
  4. Ha! That’s what you get!
  5. Neener neener neeeeeener.
  6. Wow, you’re in for a rough time right now.
  7. This happens to me at least six or seven times a week. Just walk it off.
  8. WHOA! That’s GOT to sting.
  9. Toughen up, champ.
  10. Seriously? That wasn’t even buried in the carpet. You could have easily avoided that!

Naturally, I keep these comments to myself. I empathize, after all—who else knows the pain of stepping on a rogue toy better than the one who endures it regularly? I understand the feeling of having my foot attacked by a stray metal car. It stings. So, I comfort them, rub their feet, wipe away their tears, and help them put the offending toy back in its rightful place—all the while thinking, neener neener neeeeeener.

As any parent would do, I get it.
