Location: A Home in Disarray
Surrounded by damp pool towels, a sink overflowing with dirty dishes, and utter chaos, the scene is nothing short of a circus.
Enter the characters:
Lucy is wailing at the top of her lungs for reasons unknown. Meanwhile, Max, completely undressed, runs laps around the living room, chanting, “I have a big booty!” over and over. Oliver, with six pairs of socks on his feet, is attempting to skate across the family room floor.
Just then, the babysitter arrives.
Max screams, “No!” Oliver announces from the bathroom that he has to make a big poop. Lucy stomps her way upstairs, and pandemonium erupts.
Me: “You won’t believe this! Actually, never mind, you probably can’t guess, so I’ll just tell you. It’s wild! I just got a book deal—a real, live book deal!”
Oliver yells from the bathroom, “Mommy, hurry! I need you to wipe me!”
Max, oblivious to the chaos, sticks his finger in his nose, inspects it, and wipes it on my jeans before wandering off.
Lucy discovers her computer game has been turned off and declares me the worst mother in the world.
Babysitter: “Wow! That’s incredible! What’s the book about?”
Oliver interjects, “I don’t think you wiped me properly; I feel poop in my tushy.”
Lucy retorts, “Did you not hear me? You are the meanest mother ever. Meaner than any of my friends’ parents. Meaner than Miss Hannigan. Meaner than a witch. Just so, so, so mean.”
An uncomfortable silence fills the room.
Me: “Um, parenting…”
Babysitter: Stares blankly.
End scene.
