Family Bonding Through New Experiences

They say that once you learn to ride a bike, it sticks with you for life. I, however, have a different perspective. My last attempt at cycling felt entirely foreign.

As a child, I cherished the long bike rides with my father. We’d glide along scenic routes, admiring beautiful homes and vibrant flowers. Those days were filled with joy. But as an adult, the experience was far from nostalgic. I struggled to maintain my balance, and the discomfort of the seat was more overwhelming than any pain I’d experienced before. After a rather embarrassing fall, I opted for the comfort of four wheels over two. Since then, I’ve regarded cyclists with a mixture of envy and disdain.

This past weekend, Mark decided to remove the training wheels from Bella’s bike. Within a few hours, he had her cruising up and down the street, radiating confidence. As I watched her, I couldn’t help but reflect on what I might be missing out on. There she was, so proud and independent, and suddenly, I envisioned our family cycling together. Picture this: the five of us in matching spandex, enjoying a picnic at a national park on a sunny Sunday, bonding over shared laughter while wearing coordinated sweatshirts, pedaling to our favorite coffee shop, and actually building some muscle in our thighs. Could that really be us? Could it be me?

Ha! I know my limits, and I’m perfectly content without a bike in my life. My minivan is the ideal vehicle for transporting the family without the subsequent aches and pains that biking brings. So much for that adventure.

However, I might just consider those matching sweatshirts. That’s the level of family bonding I can wholeheartedly embrace.

In summary, while the thought of biking as a family may seem appealing, I’m quite content enjoying our bonding moments in other ways—like donning matching sweatshirts instead!
