When it comes to snapping Halloween pictures of my children, I’ve learned to embrace the absurd. You see, I’m not afraid to look silly or make a fool of myself to get that perfect shot. With the weather cooperating beautifully yesterday, I knew I had a limited window to achieve my goal. Let the neighbors stare as I bounce around in a comically large witch hat, making ridiculous noises—I’m the one who gets to keep the memorable photos!

What might seem bizarre to others? Yelling these amusing phrases while flailing my arms, trying to get smiles from my little ones:

  • “Look! A bird! Watch out, it might drop something on your head!”
  • “Fart noises, doody jokes, and poop faces come your way!”
  • “Hey, I see some boogers hanging from your nose!”
  • “Do I have something on my nose? Come closer and check!”
  • “Diiiiiii-a-reeeee-haaaa!”

Trust me, it works like a charm most of the time. However, there comes a point when the kids have had enough, and that’s when I pull out the secret weapon: chocolate.
