6 Insights I Want My Unconventional Middle School Daughter to Embrace

Middle school can be a challenging experience. Looking back, it’s a phase I wouldn’t want to relive. As the eldest child, I lacked an older sibling to show me the ropes of being “cool,” resulting in many awkward moments. I often joke that I endured an extended “awkward stage” marked by feathered hair, braces (which I had not once but twice), and questionable fashion choices. While I can laugh about it now, those years were tough, and I longed for popularity.

Now, my daughter is navigating her own middle school journey, and I’m proud of how she’s handling it. However, when we encounter her peers in public, I sometimes hear her say, “Mom, she’s one of the popular kids,” when I ask why she didn’t say hello. Those words can sting, reminding me of my own experiences. Though my daughter might not always be open to discussion, there are several lessons I wish to share with her:

  1. Know Your Worth. Never let anyone convince you they’re superior to you. From my experience, those who boast about their greatness often harbor insecurities.
  2. Stay True to Yourself. Authenticity is key. Don’t alter who you are just to gain approval from others. Genuine friends will appreciate you for your individuality.
  3. Popularity Isn’t Everything. The kids who peak in popularity during school often face challenges later in life. Many of the so-called “nerds” from my youth have become some of the most successful individuals I know.
  4. Take Your Time. There’s no need to rush into adulthood. Enjoy your youth without the pressure to wear makeup, shave your legs, or try alcohol. These experiences should be savored, and I’ll be here when you’re ready.
  5. Be Friendly. When you see someone you know, don’t hesitate to smile and say hello. A simple greeting can make a big difference in someone’s day.
  6. Celebrate Your Uniqueness. Embrace who you are. You were put on this earth for a reason, and your individuality makes the world a better place.

Above all, remember that I’m always here for you. I’ve experienced feelings of inadequacy—thinking I wasn’t pretty enough, smart enough, or popular enough. But you are incredible just as you are. I am endlessly proud of you and excited to see the amazing things you will accomplish. You will learn to face challenges, build resilience, and discover your strength. I will guide you every step of the way, and know that there is no one else in the world like you, and that’s truly special.
