Why Mothers Should Celebrate Grandparents Day

This year, my Mother’s Day was pleasant, albeit a bit hectic. As a volunteer at my church, I spent the morning supervising three to six-year-olds, which meant I had to arrive by 9 AM. Afterward, we enjoyed a picnic and a brief hike at a lovely winery, with beautiful weather complementing our day. I even managed to do a load of laundry and prepare salads for both myself and my mom before heading to church.

However, as I scrolled through Facebook, I saw friends posting about extravagant Mother’s Day festivities. While they were enjoying full weekends dedicated to celebrating motherhood, I found myself sharing my day with my mom. Frustration bubbled up inside me. After all, I already share my bed, meals, and every waking moment with my kids. Shouldn’t I deserve a day that’s truly all about me? But then, I remembered that I have a mother too.

Many of my friends have lost their mothers, while others have moms who live far away or simply aren’t interested in spending time with them and their children. I am fortunate to have my mom, and she certainly deserves recognition. But wouldn’t it be nice if both of us could have a special day to celebrate?

I discovered that Grandparents Day falls on September 7 this year. A quick search revealed that this holiday was officially established by Congress back in 1978, and it’s about time it received the attention it deserves.

To make the most of this occasion, I’ve added a reminder on my phone to collaborate with my kids’ schools this August to create crafts for Grandparents Day. The school year will still be fresh, and my kids will likely be eager to participate, especially since they won’t be burnt out from recent events like Teacher Appreciation Week.

Next year, I plan to change my volunteer schedule to avoid serving on Mother’s Day, ensuring that the day is genuinely mine. Fellow moms, are you on board with this idea?
