As the sun sets before my first day at a new job, I’ve meticulously planned everything: my outfit is laid out, my lunch is packed, my favorite mug is ready for my morning coffee, and my car is spotless for the commute. I’m feeling prepared and excited. Or am I?
For the past three and a half years, I’ve embraced the role of a stay-at-home mom. In this time, I unearthed some hidden talents—like telling engaging bedtime stories and organizing chaos with flair. I rediscovered my love for cooking and reignited my passion for writing. I learned how to stretch a half tank of gas and started a blog. I became comfortable in my own skin, even without makeup, and realized I could survive three days without a shower. I’ve mastered the art of making do with what I have.
But now, it’s time to venture back into the exhilarating and daunting world of employment outside the home. I’ve navigated this path before, and I know I can do it again. This time, however, I carry a deeper understanding of the pros and cons of being a working mom.
Pros:
- At work, I’ll be addressed by my actual name—not “mommy,” “mama,” or anything similar.
- My colleagues manage their own lunches, shoelaces, and coats.
- For eight hours a day, five days a week, I won’t have to wipe anyone’s nose or behind.
- Bathroom breaks will be uninterrupted.
- I can enjoy my music during my daily drives.
- There will be no cartoons.
- Adult conversations won’t be interrupted by someone writing on the walls.
- My computer will be free from Nick Jr. games.
- I won’t be in charge of anyone.
Cons:
- Workplace etiquette prohibits farting, belching, and scratching.
- Yoga pants and pajamas are off-limits.
- Sneaking chocolate in the closet isn’t acceptable (though that might be a pro).
- A bra will be mandatory for at least eight hours.
- Naps are no longer an option.
- A sip of coffee cannot replace mouthwash.
- I can’t snack on leftovers from my co-workers.
- Arguments can’t be resolved with a simple “because I said so!”
- No one earns a “time-out” if they annoy me.
- I’ll have to brave the elements on cold or rainy days.
- I’ll miss the little ones more than I can express.
- And, alas, I’m not the boss.
To my fellow working moms: I look forward to joining the ranks of exhausted, over-caffeinated warriors in the professional realm. Best wishes to me!
To my fellow stay-at-home moms: Keep holding down the fort; your hard work is invaluable. Wear your yoga pants with pride!
