Greetings, America! It’s your neighbor from above, Canada.
Can we have a moment to discuss something? There’s been quite a bit of commotion coming from your direction lately—actually, it’s been ongoing for a year now. We understand there’s an election happening, and things tend to get louder as the date approaches. Typically, we don’t mind; in fact, we often enjoy tuning in. We know how spirited elections can get; we just wrapped up our own not too long ago. Maybe you caught a glimpse? Just kidding—we know you were probably preoccupied.
You may have noticed our new Prime Minister? He shares some similarities with Obama, as he’s a vocal advocate for feminism, possesses a great sense of humor, and even enjoys surfing. He’s been known to pop up in the background of weddings while on vacation! Not to mention, he actually has policies rooted in evidence—something that seems like it should be standard, yet here we are.
This brings us to the crux of our conversation: leadership. You may not care much about our Prime Minister, and that’s perfectly fine; after all, it’s your country. We don’t claim the title of The Leader Of The Free World, right? However, you do, and what unfolds in your nation has a ripple effect across the globe.
Usually, we don’t fret overly much about your political landscape. As a country that leans toward progressive values, we generally appreciated President Obama. A President McCain or a President Romney wouldn’t have rattled us too much.
But here’s the kicker: one of your political parties has nominated a candidate who, frankly, sends chills down our spines and leads us to question the future on this spinning rock we call home.
And it’s not just us; other nations are feeling uneasy too. There are whispers in Eastern Europe that you might not uphold your commitments because of a certain candidate who views longstanding alliances as mere protection rackets. Meanwhile, Japan is getting jittery as this same candidate has suggested leaving them with a cache of nuclear weapons and calling it a day. Just the other day, he labeled the Philippines a “terrorist nation,” and we’re still trying to wrap our heads around that one.
We hear that this candidate struggles to grasp why nuclear weapons shouldn’t be a go-to solution for every problem, which raises significant concerns for the rest of us. We look at our children playing in the park, growing up, falling in love, and embarking on their own journeys, and we can’t fathom that the best legacy we could leave them is a landscape reduced to ashes.
Beyond his apparent misunderstanding of nuclear protocols, this candidate seems oblivious to the fact that eight other countries also possess nuclear capabilities. Some are quite unpredictable, especially when an American presidential hopeful appears ready to abandon allies, cozy up to antagonists, and instigate trade wars with countries that have significant nuclear arsenals.
So, come on, America. We’re close enough to speak candidly, and we know you’re capable of better. We hope.
Warm regards,
Your Friendly Neighbors from Above
