Today, fellow editor Jamie Lee shared her top 10 beauty essentials, which sparked an interesting reflection on my own grooming habits. As a man, I found her choices enlightening, and it inspired me to create a list of my daily grooming staples. Initially, I started with just two essentials, but being competitive, I expanded it to eleven. Here goes!
- Head & Shoulders
I can’t say for certain if I’d experience dandruff if I stopped using this shampoo, but I’m not keen on finding out. Perhaps we can have someone like Tom Jenkins volunteer for that experiment. - Irish Spring Soap
My wife and I dated in our early twenties, parted ways for 18 years, and then reunited and married. During our first relationship, I used Irish Spring soap, and when we rekindled our romance, she remembered and bought it again, assuming it was my favorite. It’s back in my routine now. - Nail Clippers
There are two grooming tasks I can’t ignore: getting a haircut and keeping my nails trimmed. Unfortunately, I seem to misplace my nail clippers frequently, but thankfully, they sell them at CVS for about 99 cents, especially those conveniently located at the checkout. - Salicylic Acid
I used to think by my forties, acne would be a thing of the past. Spoiler alert: it’s not. Luckily, this over-the-counter miracle keeps it in check, and I prefer the generic brands. - My Hands
A fun fact: every barber I visit comments on how thick and fast my hair grows. Let’s just say I’m not worried about baldness. After trying various brushes and combs, I’ve learned to manage it with just my hands in 15 seconds each morning. - Inexpensive Razors
I opt for cheap disposable razors, using them a few times before tossing them out. It seems more practical than buying pricier options that I’d also end up discarding. I’m contemplating a switch to a straight razor, but haven’t committed yet. - $4 Fog-Free Shower Mirror
This is essential for my shaving routine since I prefer to shave in the shower. A fog-free mirror makes all the difference. - Brut or Sometimes Old Spice
If you want to gauge how vintage a guy is, just check his deodorant choice. I’ve been loyal to the same brand since high school, which feels like a lifetime ago. - Old Spice All-in-One
When I travel, I sometimes indulge in this versatile liquid that works as both a body wash and shampoo. It might even double as a dessert topping! - Hair Product
I can never recall the name of this product, which explains why I seem to buy a different brand each time. With my thick hair, I need something to keep it somewhat under control; I suspect it’s a mix of glue and who knows what else. - Nose and Ear Hair Trimmer
As I age, I find myself dealing with more hair in places I’d rather not. A good trimmer is a necessity, along with a steady supply of AAA batteries.
