The first time I tried waxing, there was a bit of a misunderstanding with the aesthetician. Instead of the subtle bikini line trim I envisioned, I emerged with what my friend referred to as “full baby.” I was torn; while being hair-free felt cleaner, the odd sensation of feeling like I was in a perpetual state of changing my own diaper was unsettling. Sure, I didn’t have to worry about any stray hairs peeking out from my underwear or swimsuit, but looking in the mirror felt off-kilter without my usual body hair—like a beloved landmark had suddenly disappeared overnight, leaving everyone asking, “What changed here?”
Over the years, I’ve experimented with various grooming styles. I’ve mostly preferred a simple trim around the edges, but I’ve also deliberately gone for Brazilian waxes. I’ve even contorted myself in ways that made me wonder if they were waxing my pancreas! I have no strong opinions on what women should do with their grooming routines—other than the obvious: they should choose whatever makes them feel comfortable, without external pressures from partners, friends, or media.
As bathing suit season rolls around again, I know there will be countless opinions about whether sugaring is superior to waxing, or if you should never shave because it’s “dangerous.” I want to share that this year, I haven’t spent a dime on hair removal—not out of any political stance, but simply because I’m lazy. I’ve hit the beach, and my dark Eastern European hair hasn’t been a problem at all.
With just a few straightforward tricks, you can reclaim the time, money, and anxiety typically devoted to hair removal and instead focus on what truly matters this summer—like lounging in the sun, slathered in baby oil and Zinka.
Trick No. 1: Invest in Some Clippers
I use a Lady Remington model—it’s lavender but essentially functions like an old man’s beard trimmer. Set it to the closest setting and trim down the tangled hair. It takes about five minutes, is completely safe, and results in a neat appearance that stays within the lines of your swimwear.
Trick No. 2: Shave Your Legs (Only If Needed)
With my pale skin and dark hair, my inner thighs can get a bit unruly. I shave my lower legs all year and apply shaving cream and a regular razor on my thighs during the summer. It doesn’t matter how well you trim your bikini area if your legs resemble a bramble bush! I only shave up to the point where a Photoshopped thigh gap would begin, as I’ve found that going higher leads to bumps and irritation.
Trick No. 3: Choose Retro-Cut Swimwear
I prefer bathing suit bottoms that offer more coverage, as they’re both comfortable and flattering. They also help hide any hair in the inner thigh and vulva area. While I don’t have a skirted bottom, I find them adorable and even more effective!
Trick No. 4: Cover Up with Style
Do you have a lovely scarf or sarong to tie around your hips at the pool? Or perhaps a comfy terry cloth romper? Those V-neck beach cover-ups embellished with gemstones that reach mid-thigh are great too. Even swim capris with built-in skirts are practical options. Why not embrace a vintage look with a full-coverage bathing suit with bloomers? It’s much better than spending a fortune on hair removal methods that last only a short while, or trying DIY methods like Nair that can lead to less-than-pleasant results. Plus, covering up protects your skin from sun damage.
If even these grooming suggestions seem like too much, I encourage you to embrace your natural look. Honestly, I think it’s perfectly fine, and I can’t quite grasp why there’s so much pressure to hide body hair. Interestingly, even waxing professionals are embracing the trend of going full bush these days!
