Dear Film Industry,
Is it too much to ask for you to stop tarnishing the cherished icons of my childhood? Your recent attempt to bring “Jem and the Holograms” to the big screen has left me dismayed. If the trailer is any indication, many women in their 30s and 40s are likely hiding away their vibrant pink makeup and beloved Hasbro dolls, trying to shield themselves from the disappointment of this adaptation.
What Have You Done to Jem?
In the original series, Jem was a bold, fashion-forward entrepreneur who was not only a rock star but also the head of a music company. She had a secret identity and didn’t just stumble into fame thanks to a viral video or a record label’s whims. The Jem I adored was self-sufficient and innovative, using her technology, Synergy, to navigate the challenges of fame. She was fierce—truly outrageous, as we used to say.
This new portrayal, however, seems to depict Jem as a mere pawn in someone else’s game. The trailer suggests she’s being manipulated from the very beginning, stripping away the empowerment that defined her character. I’m utterly weary—no, completely DRAINED—of witnessing these Hollywood reboots that promise to revive our treasured memories only to leave us feeling let down. If you can’t capture the essence of what made these stories special, then please, create something fresh and original. For heaven’s sake.
When Will Hollywood Learn?
Previous attempts to revive ’80s classics like “Footloose,” “The Karate Kid,” and “Clash of the Titans” have all proven disappointing, failing to recapture their original charm. These films succeeded for a reason—whether due to the actors, the writing, or the unique concepts they introduced. No amount of reimagining will bring back their former magic.
And let’s not even get started on the inexplicable success of the Transformers franchise. While action sequences, CGI, and nostalgia can draw in audiences, if you had placed Jem in the kind of thrilling scenarios she faced in her original show, it might have turned out far better than the overly emotional narrative we’ve seen so far.
Let Our Childhood Memories Rest
So, Hollywood, how about you let our childhood memories rest where they belong—in our hearts and on our dusty VHS tapes? We would be eternally grateful, and so would the aspiring screenwriters out there who are crafting genuine, original ideas.
Sincerely,
Megan

In summary, it’s time for Hollywood to stop resurrecting our beloved childhood shows without respecting their essence, and instead, focus on nurturing original storytelling.
