My pregnancy was incredibly smooth, possibly the most uneventful one ever, and I feel so fortunate to be able to say that. However, in hindsight, that should have been my first clue that my delivery would be quite different — and it certainly was.
My labor journey was lengthy but otherwise standard. We chose not to find out if we were having a boy or a girl, which added to the excitement. I was considered low risk, so my 20-week anatomy scan ended up being the last ultrasound of my pregnancy. By my 37-week appointment, my doctor conducted a cervical check and found that I was 70% effaced and 2 centimeters dilated. I genuinely thought labor was imminent, but days passed without any change. After my 41-week appointment, I was induced.
For two and a half months, my hospital bag sat packed because I was convinced I’d go into labor before my due date. Once at the hospital, I was quickly connected to an IV with Pitocin, and the contractions began steadily. Shortly after, my doctor broke my water. It was then that I finally understood what people meant when they described the sensations of labor. I opted for an epidural, and instantly, I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders — I was ready to take on anything! I relaxed, chatted with my husband, and updated family and friends, all while feeling a lot better. This was around 1 p.m. By 7 p.m., I was told to start pushing, and I was ready.
