While learning to shoot a bow and arrow with my feet was a unique challenge, becoming a father brought its own set of trials and tribulations. Matt Stutzman, a remarkable Paralympic archer, has proven that limitations are often just illusions. Born without arms, he took up archery using his feet and qualified for the London 2012 Paralympic Games on his first try. Now, as he prepares for the Paris 2024 Games, he emphasizes to his three sons the importance of hard work and determination.
“I was told at birth I would never achieve anything independently,” Stutzman reflects. “But I live in a house that isn’t modified for my needs. I drive a car and compete as an archer, despite what others said I could never do.” With nearly two decades of parenting experience, Stutzman believes in setting a strong example for his children. “Kids pay attention to your actions more than your words. I hope they adopt the mindset that they can accomplish anything,” he adds.
Growing up in a family that valued hunting, Stutzman found confidence in archery, but he faced uncertainties in fatherhood. When his first son, Carter, was on the way, he worried about how he would care for a baby. “I was anxious about holding him or changing his diaper,” he admits. “But I learned that what the baby truly needs is love, and the fears are mostly in the parents’ minds.”
As he balances his athletic career with being an attentive father, Stutzman continues to inspire his sons to embrace challenges and aim high.
