Reflecting on my first birth, I realize it didn’t align with my expectations at all. When it came time for my second birth, I was determined to take charge and advocate for the experience I truly wanted.
During my first labor, I let my tendency to please others overshadow my own desires. Instead of expressing my wishes clearly, I worried about being seen as a “chill” patient. I often repeated phrases I’d heard in parenting groups, like “The best plan is no plan!” or “You can’t control birth!” I convinced myself that as long as my baby and I made it through safely, that was all that mattered. But deep down, I had other hopes—hopes that I didn’t voice.
I wanted to pursue a vaginal birth and have immediate skin-to-skin contact with my newborn. Looking back, I see that I didn’t do enough research regarding my options. This time around, I came prepared. Armed with information and a plan, I was ready to speak up for what I wanted.
While my second birth wasn’t flawless, it was a much more healing experience. I learned that advocating for myself was essential and that it’s perfectly okay to voice my needs and preferences.
