Anyone else find themselves shouting “Sweep the leg!” at the most random times? If you grew up watching The Karate Kid, you likely do. Nostalgia runs deep for those born in the ’70s and ’80s, and for good reason—those movies were packed with unforgettable quotes. Isn’t it about time you share these treasures with your children? It could even become a new family movie night tradition, allowing you to relive your childhood while giving your kids a taste of how cool your past was.

But first, let’s have a little chat. Did you watch flicks like Beaches and Grease as a kid without a care in the world? Perhaps you were drawn in by the friendships, the dreamy fantasies, and, of course, the tunes. As a parent, though, you might find that these classics have a few more mature moments than you remember. While your parents didn’t bat an eye as you belted out “Grease Lightning” (with lines like “the chicks’ll cream”), you might have a different reaction now to Danny Zuko’s racy lyrics.

Don’t worry, much of the content will likely fly over your kids’ heads. A little planning can always help, too. If you’re worried about inappropriate scenes, it’s always a great excuse to send your kids for a bathroom break or use the “need more salt for the popcorn” ruse. And really, what’s the point of having kids if they can’t make those snack runs for you?

When you’re prepared for a nostalgic journey, choose one (or more) of these films. You probably watched them with your family as a kid, and now it’s time to share that experience with your own kiddos. Just be ready to distract them during any awkward moments that you missed as a youth.

Essential ’80s Family Movies to Watch

  1. The NeverEnding Story (1984)
Is there a more enchanting film than The NeverEnding Story? Bursting with action, adventure, quirky creatures, and even a sprinkle of romance, it’s hard to beat. Plus, it features an early performance from Jack Black—your kids likely adore him from Kung Fu Panda.
  2. The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984)
As a child, you may have needed just the right mood for Muppet films. Too much sugar? They felt dull. A cozy night with parents? Nothing compared to Kermit and Piggy’s antics!
  3. The Karate Kid (1984)
This is the iconic “sweep the leg” moment. Think “wax on, wax off,” and all the wisdom from Mr. Miyagi. If you’re hooked on Cobra Kai, it’s time to show your kids the classic that started it all. *cue evil laughter*
  4. Beetlejuice (1988)
Wild hair, bizarre outfits, and a catchphrase everyone remembers. Beetlejuice has it all, and its Tim Burton charm remains untarnished even today.
  5. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)
When was the last time you revisited this classic? It’s probably been ages, and that’s a shame considering how often you watched it back in the day. If your kids love it, there are sequels to enjoy as well! Plan a movie marathon and ask them what crazy inventions they’d create.
  6. Pretty in Pink (1986)
Are you a John Hughes aficionado? Here’s another coming-of-age classic to add to your viewing list. Molly Ringwald shines as Andie, a high school girl from Chicago who, despite her struggles, catches the eye of a popular boy. Pretty in Pink is a must for teen rom-com fans.
  7. Splash (1984)
Let’s face it, mermaid tales are always a hit. In Splash, a young Tom Hanks stars as Allen, who reunites with the mermaid who saved him as a child. As their love story unfolds in New York City, the secret of her true identity adds an intriguing twist.
