Remember the early days of YouTube? Compared to the vast array of polished and unpolished content we see today, the platform seemed so much more innocent and pure a decade ago. It was a space where bored teens could share quirky videos and where emerging artists could showcase their creativity.

In 2010, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On captured the hearts of internet users everywhere. This charming character, brought to life by the unique voice of Jenny Slate, embodies a quirky, genuine era of YouTube that many fondly remember. Now, over a decade later, Marcel is set to star in his own feature film. This animated mockumentary follows Marcel on a journey to find his place in the world, intertwined with a storyline that reflects themes of heartache and relationships, drawing inspiration from Slate’s own experiences with her ex-husband, Dean Fleischer-Camp.

Following the success of the original short, Slate and Fleischer-Camp collaborated on three more short films and two children’s books: “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On: Things About Me” (2011) and “Marcel the Shell: The Most Surprised I’ve Ever Been” (2014). In these projects, Slate lends her voice to the character while Fleischer-Camp directs. The upcoming film, which is set to premiere on June 24 under A24, will also feature a talented cast, including Isabella Rossellini, Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, and Lesley Stahl. Early reviews from film festivals have already praised the film.

Since their separation, Slate has married artist Sam Johnson, and they welcomed a daughter together in February 2021. In interviews promoting her Amazon show “I Want You Back,” Slate shared how motherhood has surprised her, revealing that she thought she would be consumed by caregiving. Instead, she has found that motherhood has inspired her to become her best self creatively. She mentioned that she looks to her child’s innocence and curiosity as a guide for her own life.

There’s a lot to learn from both a tiny shell navigating the world and the journey of motherhood. Check out the full trailer for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On below.
