We simply can’t get enough of this talented 6-year-old, Mia Johnson, who is channeling the incredible Viola Davis on her Instagram page.
Who’s the superior performer? Viola Davis, with her impressive array of awards, or little Mia, who has captured our hearts while impersonating Davis? Mia, a true star in her own right, is gaining nationwide recognition for her engaging and spot-on videos that highlight the stories of inspiring Black figures in entertainment, politics, sports, and innovation.
The journey began with a supportive mother and Mia’s early passion for acting and history. When her mom, Laura Johnson, received a pamphlet about Rosa Parks from Mia’s preschool, she excitedly read it to her daughter. Curious about Mia’s comprehension, Laura asked her a few questions, and to her delight, Mia not only answered correctly but also recited much of the information.
“I told Mia, ‘Hold on, I need to get my phone!’” Laura recalls. She quickly found a costume resembling what Rosa Parks might wear and captured the moment on video. This was the birth of a project both mother and daughter adore, and it has blossomed into a growing social media presence.
“I’m creative, and she’s eager to learn, so it’s a perfect collaboration,” Laura shares. The dynamic duo has attracted thousands of followers on their Instagram account, @go_mia_grow, where they post inspiring content about influential Black figures. They’ve even made appearances on local news and national programs, sharing their uplifting message of Black joy and achievement.
Mia has portrayed icons such as Stacey Abrams, Angela Davis, Whoopi Goldberg, Kamala Harris, and Tina Turner, complete with costumes curated by her mom, musical performances, and dance routines. They consistently produce videos year-round, not limited to Black History Month, and are currently focusing on remarkable Black inventors like George Crum, who created the potato chip, Garret Morgan, who invented the traffic light, and Marie Van Britton Brown, pioneer of home security systems.
When choosing whom to feature, Laura explains that some selections come from Mia’s interests, like when she saw Viola Davis on screen and exclaimed, “She’s beautiful, let’s do her!” Other selections are inspired by current events, like the recent disqualification of track star Sha’Carri Richardson from the Olympics.
Many of the figures Mia has depicted have taken notice. Whoopi Goldberg even sent her a box of books, including titles authored by Goldberg and other motivational stories. Laila Ali and Erykah Badu now follow Mia on Instagram.
Laura has intentionally created a positive tone for their educational posts. “At my age, I learned about the darker aspects of Black history,” she reflects. “But for Mia, I wanted to focus on the bright side.”
While the videos are currently gaining traction, Laura and Mia have been dedicated to this endeavor for years, with a total of 265 posts on Instagram to date. “We’ve been planting seeds for a while,” Laura says. “Now, we’re enjoying the fruits of our labor.”
What’s next for Mia? Laura hopes to produce a video about Joe Biden’s upcoming Supreme Court nominee in time for Women’s History Month this March.
