I’ll be honest—every time I hear someone discussing manifesting their desires, I tend to roll my eyes. Manifesting? What does that really mean? To me, it always seemed like a form of wishful thinking, often associated with privilege. It felt too good to be true. If simply wishing could make things happen, wouldn’t we all be lounging on a beach with cocktails in hand?

However, I’ve come to realize that my understanding of manifesting was somewhat misguided.

What exactly is manifesting, and does it actually work?

Beyond Just “The Secret”

Manifesting often brings to mind the ideas presented in “The Secret,” a 2006 book by Rhonda Byrne that emphasized the law of attraction—essentially suggesting that positive thoughts lead to positive outcomes. But can we talk about toxic positivity for a moment? The book’s premise falls short because, let’s face it, bad things can happen without any explanation.

Manifesting is more multifaceted than merely the law of attraction. In fact, there are numerous principles about how the universe operates. For example, the law of action states that taking steps toward your goals can expedite your manifestations.

A Spiritual Practice

Experts in this field assert that manifesting is deeply intertwined with other spiritual practices, such as meditation and the use of crystals. As intuitives Maya Fields and Lexi Hart shared in an interview, these practices help us connect with our inner selves.

The Science of Manifesting (Sort Of)

Interestingly, there are specific numbers linked to manifesting, like 1111 and 444, considered “angel numbers.” Certain sound frequencies can also aid in manifesting desires; for instance, 528 hertz is known as the “love frequency.” However, it’s crucial not to confuse manifestation with legit science. When taken too far, it can veer into unhelpful pseudoscience. Remember, while positive thinking can help during tough times, it shouldn’t replace practical actions or professional help.

Diverse Practices for Manifestation

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to manifesting. One popular technique is “scripting,” where you write down your desires and follow up with “all this manifests and better.” Some suggest writing your desire 33 times over three days. Other methods include:

  • 3-6-9 Method: Write your desire three times in the morning, six times in the afternoon, and nine times at night for a set period.
  • Vision Board: A collage of images representing your goals and dreams.
  • Intention Journaling: Write down your intentions, ideally aligned with the new moon’s energy for planting new ideas.
  • Manifestation Affirmations: Positive statements about yourself, like “I am continually learning, growing, and evolving.”
  • Gratitude Journaling: Recognizing and appreciating what the universe provides can enhance your manifesting journey.

If some techniques feel a bit “out there,” start with something more familiar to you.

Does Manifesting Work?

Some psychologists argue that manifesting is ineffective, yet many people report positive outcomes. That job promotion you received? It could be due to your proactive efforts or perhaps a sprinkle of manifestation. Met someone new? It might be because you aligned yourself with the right energy or simply decided to put yourself out there.

In the end, what matters is how these practices influence you personally. Manifesting encourages intentionality, and through that focus, you can shift your perspective and actions in daily life.

Instead of solely relying on manifesting, NYU psychology professor Gabriele Oettingen suggests “mental contrasting.” By identifying obstacles in your path, you can better navigate challenges or adjust your goals accordingly.

I can’t say for certain if manifesting truly works, but I’m definitely intrigued. As I navigate some upcoming changes, perhaps I can manifest a little clarity and calm in my life—and maybe even a new car or a dream job. Who knows, maybe I’ll aim for world peace next. Stay tuned!
