The Ten Most Accident-Prone Cities in the U.S.

I don’t usually think of myself as clumsy, but if you count the numerous times I’ve had to fix my phone after dropping it, you might think otherwise. Recently, tech repair companies Asurion and uBreakiFix by Asurion set out to determine the clumsiest cities in the country. They analyzed customer data on phone repairs, breakage claims, and online searches related to trips, slips, and falls. They also looked at the number of personal injury lawyers and orthopedic surgeons in each area.
While I’ve never sprained an ankle or walked into a glass door, I do keep a bag of rice handy to dry out my phone when accidents happen. My phone case and screen protector have saved me from further damage, yet my city didn’t even make the list of the top 50 clumsiest places in the U.S.
Curious to see how your city stacks up? According to Asurion, seven out of the top ten clumsiest cities are located in the South. Topping the list are New Orleans, LA, Raleigh, NC, and Jacksonville, FL. In contrast, the most graceful cities are primarily found in the northern U.S. and on the West Coast, with San Francisco crowned as the most graceful city—perhaps it’s due to its reputation as the queer capital of the U.S., where grace seems to be a common trait. Following San Francisco, Chicago, IL, and New York, NY, are also among the least clumsy cities.
Asurion speculated on why some regions display higher clumsiness rates. The South is not only hotter but also more humid, resulting in sweaty and slippery hands that lead to dropped phones. The average humidity in the clumsiest cities is around 71.5%, higher than the 66.8% average in other areas. Additionally, many of these clumsy cities are popular spring break destinations where partying can lead to accidents.
On the flip side, the more graceful cities tend to have a higher percentage of residents aged 65 and older, who might be more cautious with their devices. It’s worth noting that while some people embody the stereotype of being “cultured,” others can be surprisingly clumsy—like the person expertly biking through New York City while juggling a bagel and checking emails.
So, why are some people inherently clumsier than others? A study from the University of Delaware found that genetics may play a role. After testing 1,500 athletes, researchers discovered that those with injuries had slower reaction times and processing speeds compared to their injury-free counterparts. Lead author Charles Swanik pointed out that clumsiness often results from distraction, but with focus and training, individuals can improve their coordination. Strengthening exercises and vision screenings can also help reduce clumsiness.
However, sudden clumsiness may signal a more serious issue, such as a stroke or medical condition. For adults, factors like aging, brain tumors, or diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s can contribute to coordination problems. It’s essential to consult a medical professional if you notice unusual clumsiness, although sometimes, it just means you need more rest. Kids might also experience clumsiness during growth spurts or could be affected by dyspraxia, which can improve with practice and better grip tools.
Life can be smooth sailing one day and a series of unfortunate events the next—I’ve experienced both this week without shame. I’ll continue using phone protection plans and staying mindful of my surroundings because it turns out I’m clumsier than I’d like to admit.
