This is a shout-out to all the smug naysayers who are gearing up to mock others for simply enjoying seasonal favorites. Seriously, just cut it out. Before you even think about sneering at what brings joy to others during the fall, flip that sentiment around and just don’t. Let people enjoy what they love.
This message is especially relevant as we enter the peak of the fall season. We’re about to dive into pumpkin spice lattes, cozy blankets, Ugg boots, hayrides, and all the adorable autumn decorations that signal the arrival of fall. Nothing seems to ignite the sarcastic side of those who believe they’re too sophisticated for seasonal fun quite like a basic fall enthusiast relishing in their plaid shirts and cinnamon-scented candles.
It has become almost socially acceptable to be dismissive when autumn arrives and people showcase their fondness for these classic seasonal staples. I truly don’t get the hostility. Why does it matter if a group of friends gathers to watch a fall classic while lounging on straw bales by a fire pit, dressed in their comfy jeans and oversized sweaters, sipping on pumpkin-spiced beverages? How is that harming you? If they find joy in it, let them have their joy. Nobody appointed you the gatekeeper of what’s cool, and your bitterness is showing.
What’s more, this isn’t just a fall issue. You should learn to let people appreciate things throughout the entire year. Criticizing someone’s happiness is a major downer, no matter the season. Unless someone is being harmful to themselves or others, why not let people enjoy what they love?
Of course, it’s important to speak out against harmful behaviors—be it racism, sexism, or any form of discrimination. Those are serious matters that require attention. But what’s with the fixation on disliking harmless things that bring others comfort?
Take, for instance, my partner’s love for Taylor Swift. He’s faced a lot of ridicule from people who think it’s odd for a grown man to enjoy her music. But she’s sold millions of records for a reason—her catchy tunes resonate with many. While she might not be on my personal playlist, if my partner wants to sing along to “Shake It Off” while we make breakfast, I’m all for it. I’ve learned to embrace and let people enjoy their interests.
Every time something becomes popular, there will always be a set of people who will dislike it. And that’s perfectly fine. You can choose to abstain from trends you don’t like while still acknowledging that these trends bring happiness to others. It’s not right to make others feel inferior for enjoying what you don’t.
For years, when asked about my favorite movies, I’d sheepishly respond, “Oh, I have terrible taste in movies. Don’t ask me.” This stemmed from a humiliating experience at a party when someone laughed at my choice of “Father of the Bride.” That moment made me second-guess my preferences. But I’ve grown since then and realized that enjoying light-hearted films is perfectly valid.
Let people enjoy what they enjoy. I’ll say it again: LET PEOPLE ENJOY WHAT THEY ENJOY.
If you’re unhappy in your own life, why not let others have their fun? If your neighbor loves their Peloton, enjoys monthly massages, and gets Botox appointments, but you prefer a treadmill and think those things are frivolous, keep your opinion to yourself and enjoy what you like.
Being a killjoy isn’t trendy or appealing. People have enough challenges in life without your negativity adding to the mix. Mind your own business and allow others to relish in their passions.
