Have you heard about the shocking new law in Texas? No, not that one… the other one. A recently enacted gun law allows most residents to openly carry firearms in public without any permit or training. What could possibly go wrong?
This “constitutional carry” bill comes at a time when gun violence in Texas is escalating. According to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), shootings in the state have surged by approximately 14 percent this year, leading one to question whether making it easier for citizens to carry guns is truly the solution.
“This legislation represents a renewed trust in our citizens,” state senator Dan Morgan, the bill’s sponsor, stated, as reported by CNN. However, one must wonder on what grounds this trust is based. Even trained professionals sometimes accidentally harm themselves — just last month, a Texas officer shot himself in the foot. Additionally, the number of “responsible gun owners” who inadvertently allow their firearms to fall into the hands of children is troubling. This sense of trust may not be fully warranted.
Law enforcement officials in Texas are also expressing their concerns. Dallas Police Chief Lisa Reynolds commented, “A minimum level of training should be a requirement for carrying a firearm and aligns with the Second Amendment.” It appears the notion of a “well-regulated militia” has been disregarded entirely.
It’s hard to believe that individuals can now walk around with lethal weapons without any form of training. Yet, this represents a hallmark of American freedom — just be careful not to accidentally injure yourself in the process.
There is no indication of what other initiatives the GOP-led state legislature and Governor Greg Abbott will pursue next. Perhaps a law eliminating the need for a driver’s license or driver’s education? And while they’re at it, should doctors really require medical licenses? If someone feels confident enough to perform brain surgery, why should the government intervene? I’m sure Dan Morgan would support that too.
While I understand the sentiment behind “Don’t mess with Texas!”, allowing virtually anyone to display firearms in public seems dangerously reckless. If a disaster were to occur, Texas hospitals are already strained, thanks to the ongoing pandemic.
In conjunction with the extreme abortion legislation passed recently, one has to wonder if Texas is intentionally steering toward a dystopian future. If that’s the case, it’s certainly unfolding — and I dread to think of what lawmakers might concoct next in the name of “freedom.”
