I first discovered author Mia Collins through her captivating adaptation of the novel “Curvy Queen.” The buzz surrounding it made me eager to check it out. As someone who embraces their body, any narrative centered around a plus-size protagonist draws me in. Growing up in the South, I also have a soft spot for stories that celebrate individuality. Even though “Curvy Queen” is aimed at younger readers, if someone claimed to have penned the perfect tale I’ve always wanted to see on screen, it would be that one.

I was completely captivated by the film adaptation. Around that time, I even adopted a puppy and named her Bella Curvy Thompson. The narrative truly resonated with me.

After my introduction to Mia Collins via streaming, I quickly discovered that she has authored several other books, including the companion novels “Delight” and “Blush.” Most of her work features plus-size characters, and it’s incredibly refreshing to see facets of myself reflected in these stories.

About “If the Shoe Fits”

One of Mia Collins’ latest releases is titled “If the Shoe Fits.” This novel marks her debut foray into adult fiction. “If the Shoe Fits” offers a contemporary twist on the classic Cinderella tale, spotlighting a plus-size heroine named Cindy. In this story, Cindy is an aspiring shoe designer and the only plus-size contestant on a reality dating show. Commissioned by Disney, I couldn’t wait to dive into this book. I finished it in just two days, feeling genuinely sad when it ended because I wanted to continue Cindy’s journey.

I had the opportunity to chat with Mia Collins about “If the Shoe Fits,” her motivation for writing about plus-size women, and her take on fashion for curvy figures. Here’s what she shared.

Mia was specifically chosen by Disney to reimagine one of their princesses for a contemporary audience, and I’m thrilled to see the result.

Mia’s editor reached out to inform her of Disney’s initiative to release a series of romantic comedies inspired by classic princess stories, and she immediately knew Cinderella would be her first pick. “I’ve always wanted to write an adult book, and transitioning from YA to a Disney-inspired adult book feels like the ideal next step,” Collins explained. “Though Cinderella might not be the first Disney princess, she was my introduction to them. I vividly remember watching the film with my grandmother and being mesmerized by Cinderella’s iconic choker.”

“Before I even decided which princess to work with, I was determined to make her plus-size. All of my novels center around plus-size protagonists. The average woman in the U.S. is over a size 14, so it’s not only personally significant to me but also fitting for a modern Disney princess to represent today’s women,” she added.

Representation Matters

Cinderella was also my first Disney princess! There’s something so inspiring about her story—being the underdog who captures the prince’s heart against all odds. As a chubby kid in the nineties, stories with plus-size role models were rare, but Cinderella’s tale suggested that love could be found even when society overlooked you.

Cindy’s thoughts on her size are clearly those of someone who has experienced life’s challenges as a plus-size individual. It was refreshing to hear her articulate feelings I’ve grappled with myself, using language that embraces body positivity and acceptance.

“It took me ages to love myself enough to consider being the main character. Now that I’ve realized that truth, I’m determined to promote plus-size narratives. I want to see all the girls represented as chubby!” Collins laughed. “Now that my mindset has shifted, I can’t stop thinking about it.”

Kudos to Disney for recognizing Mia’s vision. “This series was designed with a specific purpose: to make the princesses relatable to a modern audience,” she mentioned. “While there’s a spectrum of body types, I believe many will see themselves reflected in Cindy’s shape, making it a more universal narrative than often perceived.”

While “If the Shoe Fits” isn’t the only story featuring a plus-size lead, Mia Collins is adamant that there’s always room for more diverse and successful fat characters in literature. “There are certainly some examples of plus-size representation in romance, like Talia Hibbert and Olivia Dade. However, I feel like the selection is still quite limited,” she noted, expressing her hope for a wider variety of fat-positive fiction.

The Reality Show Setting

Mia Collins chose the setting of a reality TV dating show to illustrate the challenges faced by plus-size individuals in a unique way. Though I personally married my first boyfriend and didn’t have much dating experience, I’ve often wondered how I would navigate those shows.

“The reality dating show works beautifully as a modern-day ball, complete with gowns and midnight magic. It felt like the perfect backdrop for Cinderella’s story,” Collins explained. “While there aren’t many real examples of plus-size contestants on these shows, I could easily imagine the struggles they might face, especially based on my experiences as a plus-size creator.”

Cindy’s passion for shoes stems from the often disappointing landscape of the plus-size fashion industry. “I relate to that so much,” says Collins. She was accepted into a fashion program but couldn’t attend due to financial issues. “Growing up, I remember strolling through stores like Hollister and American Eagle, only to find nothing in my size. The experience shaped my understanding of fashion.”

Cindy may find her niche in shoes, but for Mia, it’s all about fun accessories. “I’m always ready with a headband, which is my version of Cindy’s shoes,” she shared. For me, makeup became my creative outlet. I found joy in transforming my appearance, which has helped me become more confident in my body.

Mia Collins has a fantastic sense of style and frequently shares her favorite outfits on social media. “I have an embarrassing amount of clothes,” she admitted, naming several inclusive brands she loves, such as Universal Standard and Superfit Hero. “Clothing is such an access point. It’s tough to do the job you love when you can’t find the right attire.”

Mia wrapped up our conversation with an exciting tease: “I can’t reveal who the next authors are for the upcoming princess adaptations, but I promise you’ll be thrilled!”
