Halsey collaborated with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from Nine Inch Nails to write and record the album herself. She emphasized that the cover image aims to celebrate the beauty of pregnant and postpartum bodies, while also addressing the ongoing social stigma surrounding bodies and breastfeeding. “We have a long way to go with eradicating the social stigma around bodies & breastfeeding. I hope this can be a step in the right direction!” she added.
Earlier this year, Halsey announced her pregnancy, referring to her baby as her “rainbow,” a term used for a child conceived after a loss. In 2018, she shared her experience of having a miscarriage during a live performance, revealing the emotional turmoil she faced at that moment.
