During the pandemic, something remarkable unfolded that I will always cherish. My four- and six-year-old children formed an incredible bond with our elderly neighbors, who are both 68 years old.
It began innocently when my kids would venture outside after their virtual school sessions. They would shout, “Hello, Ms. Linda! Want to play?” from across the street. They showcased their skills in running and jumping, and their playdates often culminated in a lively dance performance.
As summer 2020 approached, we found ourselves quite isolated with no plans, which was challenging for three energetic little ones. So, we started scheduling regular visits with Ms. Linda and Ms. Carol each week. The neighbors delighted in the imaginative tales my kids spun. On our morning walks, my children eagerly recounted all the animals we spotted, zooming around on their scooters or bikes and calling out, “Look at me, Ms. Carol!”
Their friendship blossomed into the fall, especially as two of my children began their virtual kindergarten. While they enjoyed online interactions with their peers, I could see their faces light up during in-person visits with Ms. Linda and Ms. Carol. They would dash to Ms. Linda’s driveway, request to move her porch bench into the driveway, and take turns pretending to “go to sleep” on the pillows. One day, as I walked hand in hand with my youngest daughter back to our house, she turned to me and said, “Mommy? Ms. Linda is my best friend.” It was heartwarming to witness such a special connection during such a stressful time.
In winter, my children enjoyed playtime in Ms. Linda’s backyard, their faces beaming with joy as we played games of good guys and bad guys. They even learned some Spanish from her and listened to stories from her childhood. During a severe snowstorm in February in Texas, Ms. Linda watched from her window as our kids threw snowballs and sledded down the street. We kept in touch through texts during the power outages, and Ms. Linda had to temporarily relocate to a friend’s house due to her heating system failing.
As spring arrived and restrictions eased with the rollout of vaccines, my kids began visiting Ms. Linda at her home more frequently. They engaged in games like I-Spy, played cards, and enjoyed her piano. My oldest daughter even planned a dance and song performance and expressed her nerves about performing for someone outside the family. Ms. Linda smiled warmly, assuring her, “Don’t worry. I’m your family now.”
I was initially concerned about my twins celebrating their sixth birthday during the pandemic. How could I make it special for them? Ultimately, all they truly needed was the companionship of their neighbors. The day was perfect, filled with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and LOL Dolls theme, ice cream, and presents. My son’s laughter and excitement during a game of Red Rover spoke volumes.
As summer 2021 approached, we began to venture out more and return to our usual routines. Although our visits became less frequent, the bond formed between us remains as strong as ever. My children still ask to play with Ms. Linda and Ms. Carol after dinner and come home with big smiles and stories to share.
Witnessing this unexpected friendship develop has been a unique and heartwarming experience that has positively impacted my children. The neighbors we barely knew a year ago have now become a second family to us, and it’s a beautiful gift to see Ms. Linda and Ms. Carol embrace my children as if they were their own.
