The Biden family is grieving the loss of their beloved 13-year-old German Shepherd, Champ, who “passed away peacefully at home,” as announced by the White House.
“Our family lost our dear companion Champ today,” said President Joe Biden. “I will miss him.” In a heartfelt statement shared by both Joe and Jill Biden, Champ is remembered as a “constant, cherished companion over the past 13 years,” adored by the entire Biden household.
“Even in his final months, whenever we entered a room, he would muster the strength to rise, his tail wagging, eager for an ear scratch or a belly rub,” the statement continued. “He found joy in curling up at our feet in front of the fire at the end of a long day, being a comforting presence in our meetings, or basking in the sun in the White House garden.”
Champ was adopted by the Bidens in 2008 and was one of two German Shepherds living at the White House, alongside Major, who was adopted in 2018 as the first rescue dog to reside there. When Joe Biden was elected President, both Champ and Major became the first pets in the White House after a four-year absence of pets under the previous administration.
According to reports, the name “Champ” was inspired by a saying from Joe Biden’s father: “Any time you get knocked down, champ — get up!” Champ was with the Bidens during Joe’s tenure as Vice President, spending his days “chasing golf balls on the front lawn of the Naval Observatory.”
“In his younger days, he was the happiest when chasing golf balls or racing to catch our grandchildren as they played in our Delaware backyard,” the statement reminisced. “In our happiest moments and our saddest days, he was by our side, attuned to our every unspoken feeling. We love our sweet, good boy and will miss him always.”
Rest in peace, Champ. Your presence will be deeply missed by many.
