In an exciting move towards sustainability, Mattel has unveiled the Barbie Loves the Ocean collection, marking the brand’s inaugural series of dolls made from recycled ocean-bound plastic. Known for creating some of the most iconic toys in history, Mattel is committed to making Barbie and her friends more inclusive while also taking significant steps to protect the environment. This initiative is part of the company’s broader goal to utilize 100% recycled, recyclable, or bio-based plastics in all its products and packaging by 2030, starting with these new dolls that consist of over 90% recycled materials sourced from ocean-bound plastics.

About the Barbie Loves the Ocean Collection

The Barbie Loves the Ocean collection features three dolls, each crafted from 90% recycled ocean-bound plastic components. Accompanying these dolls are a Beach Shack playset and various accessories, all made from similarly high percentages of recycled materials. Priced between $9.99 and $19.99, this launch contributes to Mattel’s “The Future of Pink is Green” campaign, which aims to educate children about sustainability in a fun and accessible manner.

Educational Initiatives

In addition to launching the new dolls and eco-friendly beach accessories, Mattel released a video as part of Barbie’s popular YouTube series, “Barbie Shares How We Can All Protect the Planet.” This animated clip teaches young viewers about the importance of environmental care and offers simple actions they can take at home to make a difference, such as unplugging devices when not in use, properly disposing of trash, and using reusable lunch boxes and water bottles.

Statements from Mattel Executives

“This Barbie launch is another addition to Mattel’s growing portfolio of purpose-driven brands that inspire environmental consciousness with our consumer as a key focus,” stated Mattel’s President and Chief Operating Officer, Brian Lewis. “At Mattel, we empower the next generation to explore the wonder of childhood and reach their full potential. We take this responsibility seriously and are continuing to do our part to ensure kids can inherit a world that’s full of potential too.”

“Barbie Loves the Ocean is a prime example of sustainable innovations we’ll make as part of creating a future environment where kids can thrive,” added Mattel’s Senior Vice President and Global Head of Barbie & Dolls, Sarah Jenkins. “We are passionate about leveraging the scope and reach of our global platform to inspire kids to be a part of the change they want to see in the world.”
