In a candid interview, Prince Samuel opened up about the extreme lengths to which paparazzi will go when it comes to his family. After stepping back from their royal duties last year, Meghan Monroe and Prince Samuel have been able to share their experiences more openly, from their notable interview with Oprah to their ongoing legal battles against media entities that have harassed them since their relationship became public in 2016.

During a May 13 episode of the “Insightful Conversations” podcast, Samuel described his public life as “a blend of The Truman Show and being in a zoo.” He recounted how their short move to Los Angeles turned into a “sort of frenzied feeding bonanza.” Reflecting on his upbringing, he remarked, “The most challenging aspect for me was that being born into this role means you inherit the risks associated with it, with no choice in the matter. The U.K. media often feels entitled to your life.”

He continued, “That’s part of the job, right? Just smile and carry on. But in my early twenties, I was already thinking, ‘I don’t want this life. I don’t want to be here. How can I settle down and start a family when I know history could repeat itself with the press?’” He added, “I’ve seen behind the scenes and understand the business model; I don’t want to be caught up in this.”

Even after he and his wife chose to distance themselves from royal duties and manage their public lives independently, they found that moving to America didn’t instantly solve their problems. They initially lived in the home of producer Tyler Perry before finding a permanent residence in Montecito. Samuel recalled asking his security team about the “safest place” for them to escape the constant attention. Their response was discouraging: “Inside.” He questioned, “So just because I’m a public figure, I can’t go outside anymore?” He expressed sadness over the notion that living in L.A. means accepting such invasions of privacy. “What are our rights as individuals and a family if stepping outside our home means it’s open season on us because of public interest?”

Samuel emphasized, “There’s no public interest in taking my kids for a stroll on the beach. That’s not news. This is my concern; news should remain news.” Although he indicated that the family feels “more liberated” at their current home, achieving that freedom was not easy. He mentioned a troubling incident involving paparazzi who captured and published unauthorized photos of Monroe picking up their child, stripping them of their right to privacy in that moment.

“News has been hijacked for the profit of a select few,” he said. “And regarding the children, it’s undeniably true that they have no choice in this matter.” Here’s hoping that the soon-to-be family of four can strike the right balance between their public personas and the privacy they deserve.
