In a significant move, Peloton has announced a recall of its Tread and Tread+ treadmill models following the heartbreaking death of a six-year-old child and numerous injury reports. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there have been 72 incidents involving adults, children, pets, and objects being “pulled under the rear” of the Tread+ model. This includes 29 reports of injuries to children, with some suffering from severe second- and third-degree abrasions, broken bones, and lacerations.

Peloton is urging customers who own either treadmill to immediately cease use and reach out to the company for a full refund or other appropriate remedies. The Tread and Tread+ were priced at $2,495 and $4,295, respectively.

CEO’s Statement

Peloton’s CEO, Mark Thompson, stated, “Recalling both products is the right course of action for our users and their families. We acknowledge that our initial response to the CPSC regarding the Tread+ was flawed. We should have communicated more effectively from the beginning, and for that, I apologize. This announcement underscores our commitment to collaborating with the CPSC to enhance safety measures for our users. We are dedicated to leading the industry in product safety.”

CPSC Warning

The CPSC had issued a warning on April 17 regarding the dangers associated with the Tread+ for households with children or pets. In light of the tragic incident, Thompson had previously issued a statement on March 18, emphasizing the importance of safety and offering guidance to keep children and pets away from Peloton equipment.

Injury Reports

Recent reports from the CPSC have highlighted several injuries to children caused by the Tread+. One alarming case involved a three-year-old boy who was found unresponsive and required resuscitation, resulting in significant brain injuries and visible marks on his back and neck.

Refund and Safety Measures

For users of the Tread+, Peloton is advising them to discontinue use and contact the company for a full refund until November 6, 2022. After this date, only partial refunds will be available. For those preferring to keep their Tread+ treadmill, Peloton suggests relocating it to an area inaccessible to children and pets. The company also plans to implement software updates that will automatically lock the treadmill after use, requiring a 4-digit passcode to unlock it.

For Tread users, Peloton is offering a full refund or the opportunity to have their treadmill inspected and repaired to prevent future accidents.
