Stay Composed: American Girl Is Reviving Its Iconic Original Dolls

American Girl is celebrating its 35th anniversary by reintroducing its six original dolls: Molly, Samantha, and more. If you were like me and grew up in the ’90s with a budget-conscious parent who nearly fainted at the price, you might have missed out on owning one of these cherished dolls. I longed for Molly for years (my mom eventually relented and got Molly plus two other AG dolls for my daughter, so I’m totally fine — definitely not scarred for life).

Now that we’re the parents, American Girl’s decision to bring back these six classic dolls allows us to share this nostalgic experience with our children. Sure, you might consider buying one for your kid, but why not indulge your inner child as well? After all, we have some adult funds at our disposal now (unless, of course, a car or appliance breaks down, or a child needs braces — ugh).

The Original Six Dolls

The original six dolls — Samantha Parkington, Kirsten Larson, Molly McIntire, Felicity Merriman, Addy Walker, and Josefina Montoya — are currently available on the American Girl website, looking just as stunning as they did when I was nine.

These dolls have been retired since the mid-2010s, making them hard to find without resorting to eBay or that rare lucky find at a garage sale. Now, they retail for $150, which is a much more manageable price compared to the thousands you might pay for an original.

A Message from American Girl

In a press release, Jamie Cygielman, General Manager of American Girl, stated, “For 35 years, American Girl has created powerful stories with smart, courageous heroines that have helped shape an entire generation of women. As we celebrate this major milestone, we’re thrilled to recognize the very first generation of American girls who grew up with these beloved, original characters. We look forward to creating special, multi-generational experiences for families via their shared love of the brand.”

35th Anniversary Collection

Each doll is part of a special 35th Anniversary Collection, which includes a signature 18-inch doll dressed in her original outfit along with authentic accessories and the character’s first paperback book featuring a vintage cover. Plus, the doll comes in a collectible retro-inspired box — yes, please!

Exciting Anniversary Activities

American Girl also has exciting anniversary activities planned, such as an advice book voiced by the American Girls, a digital album with character-inspired songs, and a virtual cupcake-decorating party on May 8th featuring Bobbie Lloyd, Chief Baking Officer of Magnolia Bakery.

While receiving my cherished Molly doll in my late 30s (or even Samantha, which I would’ve gladly accepted) may not evoke the same nostalgia as it would have in 1992, it will still be a thrill. Luckily, thanks to American Girl, we have the opportunity to relive our childhood experiences.
