Disney+ has just dropped the trailer for ‘Luca’, a delightful new film from Disney and Pixar set to premiere on June 18, 2021. After a challenging year, this lighthearted Pixar adventure offers the perfect antidote to our weary spirits. What’s even more special is that this charming story was inspired by the director’s own friendship with a childhood companion. “Luca is based on my best friend, Marco,” director Giovanni Rossi shared with Indiewire. “I was shy and cautious, while he was free-spirited and adventurous, always getting into mischief.”
In the film, the boys transition from life as sea monsters to exploring the human town of Portorosso, where they disguise themselves and embark on the summer of a lifetime. However, they must keep their true identities hidden, a metaphor that resonates deeply with the director’s views on inclusivity and celebrating individuality. “Growing up, you often feel like an outsider,” Rossi reflected. “My friend and I would feel out of place at times, and I love how the sea monster symbolizes the feeling of being different.”
