Recently welcoming her third child, a daughter named Mae, during a home water birth, actress and musician Hilary Duff opened up about why she wanted her nine-year-old son, Luca, to witness the process. Surrounded by her husband, Matthew Koma, and their children, Duff emphasized the significance of showing Luca the strength of women and the realities of childbirth.

Duff expressed to the Informed Pregnancy Podcast, “It was important for me to have Luca there because I believe in being honest about how powerful women are and what childbirth entails. He understands periods, and I want to normalize that conversation for all the women he’ll encounter in his life.” She noted that she wanted him to grasp true human strength, stating, “Sometimes, a 9-year-old boy might think strength is just about physical power, but we bring life into the world. We navigate the complexities of childbirth.”

Despite her intentions, the birth didn’t go as planned. Duff shared that labor was remarkably quick, lasting just over three hours, and Luca arrived in the room “right as I was pulling the baby out.” She reflected on the importance of teaching her son about the various ways childbirth can occur. “I want him to respect his partner’s choices, whether that’s at home or in a hospital,” she explained.

Sharing her birth experiences, Duff hopes to inspire and educate others, stating, “Hearing different birth stories is fascinating. It’s incredible what women can achieve… I hope this encourages other moms.” Mae James Bair was born on March 24, 2021, and it’s clear she has a supportive and progressive brother looking out for her.
