Additionally, the FDA has authorized vaccine distributors to extract an 11th dose from the existing 10-dose vials when feasible. While this minimizes vaccine waste, it requires special syringes, which have been in short supply for months. Health officials warn that without adequate supplies of these syringes, it may only be possible to obtain 13 doses from the new 15-dose vials.
Despite these challenges, the increase in doses per vial offers hope for expediting production and delivery, aligning with President Joe Biden’s commitment to ensure every U.S. adult has access to the vaccine by May 1. This goal had seemed jeopardized by the recent Johnson & Johnson setback, but at least 46 states have responded by promising to expand vaccine eligibility to all adults by that date or sooner.
