On the second day of Derek Chauvin’s murder trial, an emotional testimony was given by an off-duty firefighter who witnessed George Floyd’s tragic death. Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is currently facing murder charges for his involvement in Floyd’s death, which sparked nationwide protests for racial justice.

Genevieve Anderson, a 27-year-old firefighter, recounted her desperate attempts to assist Floyd as he was restrained on the ground by police. During her testimony, she revealed her anguish as she pleaded with the officers, including Chauvin, to allow her to check Floyd’s pulse.

Anderson explained that on May 25, 2020, while out for a walk, she heard a woman shouting that the police were killing someone. She approached the scene to find a handcuffed man lying motionless under the weight of several officers. She described Floyd’s face as “smooshed into the ground,” looking “puffy and swollen,” which indicated the danger he was in.

Identifying herself as an off-duty firefighter, Anderson tried various approaches to persuade the officers to assist Floyd. Despite her medical training indicating that Floyd was in critical condition, she was met with resistance. In her efforts, she called 911 and informed the dispatcher, “I literally watched police officers not take a pulse and not do anything to save a man.”

In tears, Anderson expressed her frustration to the jury, stating, “I could have given medical assistance, and that’s exactly what I should have done,” but was unable to do so because the officers prevented her access. She even offered to guide the officers through life-saving measures, such as chest compressions, but they ignored her pleas.

The officers dismissed her by saying, “If you really are a Minneapolis firefighter, you would know better than to get involved.” Derek Chauvin’s trial is ongoing, with charges including second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.
