In a powerful moment that has resonated across social media, Lee Wong, an Asian American veteran and elected official, delivered a heartfelt address at a board meeting in West Chester Township, Ohio. During his speech, Wong unbuttoned his shirt to reveal the scars from his service in the U.S. Army, challenging the audience with the question, “Is this patriot enough?”

Wong’s remarks came amid a troubling rise in violence and discrimination against the AAPI community. The video of his speech, shared on Twitter, has garnered nearly 4.5 million views, reflecting the strong public response to his message.

“People question my patriotism, saying I don’t look American enough; they can’t get past my face,” Wong expressed. “I refuse to live in fear of insults or intimidation.” At 69, he made it clear that he would no longer be silent about the prejudice he has faced. “I have endured a lot in silence, but I’m done being ashamed. I’m no longer inhibited by how others perceive me,” he declared, emphasizing the equality promised by the U.S. Constitution.

Wong recounted a traumatic experience from his youth when he was hospitalized after a racist attack in Chicago shortly after moving to the U.S. from Borneo. The attacker faced no real consequences, leaving Wong with scars—both physical and emotional. He lamented the increasing frequency of hate crimes, citing a report by Stop AAPI Hate that tracked nearly 3,800 incidents of anti-Asian violence from March 2020 to February 2021.

“This community has shown me love, but some ignorant people still question my loyalty and patriotism,” Wong asserted, illustrating the ongoing struggle against bias. His unplanned speech, he said, was a necessary response to the current climate of hostility. “In that moment, I just knew I had to speak out,” he reflected.
