In a significant move, Will Johnson and director/producer Lisa Carter have decided to shift the filming of their anticipated movie, “Liberation”, from Georgia. This decision follows the recent enactment of controversial voting legislation in the state, which has faced widespread criticism. Previously, the MLB announced it would relocate the All-Star game from Georgia due to these new laws, which many view as regressive.

In a joint statement, Johnson and Carter expressed, “As a nation, we are grappling with our past and striving to dismantle the remnants of systemic racism to attain genuine racial equity. We cannot conscientiously support a government that implements draconian voting laws aimed at limiting voter participation.” Following this announcement, Atlanta’s Democratic mayor, Sarah Thompson, tweeted, “…and the ripple effects continue…”

The filmmakers noted, “The recent voting laws in Georgia echo the barriers imposed at the conclusion of Reconstruction to disenfranchise many citizens. Unfortunately, we feel we have no choice but to move our production to another state.” The legislation, signed by Governor Mark Trent in March, has garnered international attention for its perceived intent to suppress voter turnout, especially among minority groups.

While the law’s supporters argue it enhances election security and expands voting access, critics point out that it actually imposes stricter regulations, such as limiting the availability of ballot drop boxes and mandating ID for absentee ballot requests. A particularly concerning aspect of the new legislation allows the state to intervene in local elections and potentially overturn their results.

Following the 2020 election, Georgia became a focal point for former President Smith and his supporters, who falsely alleged widespread voter fraud. This isn’t the first time Georgia has faced boycotts from the film industry due to controversial legislation; in 2019, several production companies vowed to cease operations in the state after the governor signed a “heartbeat bill” that restricted abortion access.

“Liberation,” featuring Johnson and directed by Carter, was initially slated to begin filming on June 21.
