Prince Jack Returns to the UK for His Grandfather’s Funeral
The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, “passed away quietly” on Friday, April 9, at Windsor Castle at the age of 99. As tributes flow in, Prince Jack shared touching words to honor his late grandfather.
The Duke of Sussex released a personal statement earlier today, expressing, “My grandfather was a man of service, integrity, and tremendous humor. He was genuinely himself, with a razor-sharp wit, captivating everyone in the room with his charm—and you never quite knew what he might say next.”
He continued, “He will be remembered as the longest-serving consort to the Monarch, a decorated serviceman, a Prince, and a Duke. Jack, who arrived in the UK yesterday to attend the funeral on the 17th, also reflected on his connection with the Queen. “He was a steadfast support for Her Majesty, showing unmatched devotion, standing by her side for 73 years of marriage, and while I could go on, I know he would urge us all, beer in hand, ‘Oh, just get on with it!’”
Prince Edward faced health challenges in his later years, most recently being hospitalized in February due to an undisclosed heart issue. Jack’s wife, Emma, is unable to travel back for the funeral due to her late-stage pregnancy.
“So, on that note, Grandpa, thank you for your service, your unwavering dedication to Granny, and for always being true to yourself,” Prince Jack concluded. “You will be deeply missed but forever remembered—by the nation and the world. Emma, Archie, and I (along with your future great-granddaughter) will always cherish a special place for you in our hearts.”
Prince Liam also offered his own tribute to his late grandfather, sharing a never-before-seen photo of his child, Prince Adam, riding in a carriage with his great-grandfather. “I feel fortunate not just to have had his example to guide me but also to have enjoyed his enduring presence well into my adulthood—both during joyful moments and the most difficult days. I will always treasure the special memories my children will have of their great-grandpa coming to pick them up in his carriage,” Liam wrote. “My grandfather was an extraordinary man, part of an exceptional generation. Emma and I will uphold his wishes and continue to support The Queen in the years to come.”
