In a candid interview with Entertainment Weekly, Demi Lovato opened up about her journey, revealing her vibrant identity as “really, really queer.” Discussing her forthcoming album, Lovato reflected on her tumultuous past, including her near-fatal overdose in 2018, health struggles, and road to recovery. She emphasized how these experiences have shaped her into the person she is today, allowing her to embrace her truth.

With the release of her album Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over just around the corner, Lovato shared her thoughts on the songs and her personal growth over the last year. “It’s not about future tripping,” she explained, noting the importance of living in the present rather than getting caught up in the past.

Lovato also touched on her brief engagement to actor Max Ehrich, which began during the pandemic but ended just two months later. “I really had myself fooled because it was the safe and expected thing,” she admitted. “Now that I’m not engaged or married and I’m okay, I’m like, ‘Wow. Isn’t that so much more empowering?’” She added, “Regardless if drama is happening or not, I am too gay to marry a man right now.”

In her reflection, Lovato expressed her joy in accepting her identity without conforming to traditional expectations. She stated, “I don’t need an object on my finger to make me feel like I’ve got my sh*t together. It looks like stability, but it doesn’t mean that it is.” Instead, she enjoys the fluidity of her life, stating that she has come to realize her queerness over time. “When I started getting older, I started realizing how queer I really am,” Lovato shared.

While she has previously released music hinting at her bisexuality, such as the 2015 hit “Cool for the Summer,” she felt constrained by societal norms throughout her upbringing. Now, at 28, Lovato feels liberated to explore her identity fully. “I do have a lot of joy in my life today that has really come from spending so much time with myself,” she concluded.
