In a previous piece, I discussed how adult content helped me explore my own sexuality. While writing a book featuring two female leads who fell in love—something I hadn’t experienced myself—I turned to adult films to portray authentic intimacy. One commenter, apparently only familiar with the headline, scoffed at the idea of using adult content to learn about genuine sexual experiences.
I felt the need to defend this approach. There is indeed adult content that presents sex in a realistic manner, free from the male gaze. However, just because a video portrays consensual and positive sexual experiences, it doesn’t automatically qualify as feminist porn.
The truth is, the only way to ensure that the adult content you consume aligns with feminist principles is to pay for it. I wasn’t doing that, and I regret it.
If we genuinely care about the well-being of the performers in the videos we watch—meaning we want them to be safe, respected, and fairly compensated—we must invest in ethical adult content. When we seek out free options from various “tube” sites, we are often viewing stolen content. We can’t know how it was produced, how the creators were treated, or whether they received fair compensation for their work. More often than not, they’re not earning anything from our stolen views.
Moreover, platforms like Pornhub are notorious for hosting problematic content, including issues related to child exploitation and abuse. Until these sites rectify their practices and ensure that performers receive a fair share of the revenue, we should refrain from viewing their content.
