Authorities have identified the officer who tragically lost his life in a mass shooting at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, as Officer Jason Rivers. The incident, which occurred at a King Soopers store, claimed the lives of ten individuals, including the dedicated officer.
Officer Rivers had served for over a decade in the Boulder Police Department, and Chief Linda Carter described his actions as “valiant” during a press briefing at the scene. “He was the first responder on site and was shot fatally,” Carter stated, visibly emotional as she expressed her condolences. “My thoughts are with the victims of this tragedy. I am deeply thankful for the officers who intervened, and I mourn the loss of Officer Rivers.”
Boulder County District Attorney Sarah Johnson also paid tribute, noting, “He was recognized as one of the finest officers within the Boulder Police Department, and his life was taken too soon.”
Jason’s father, Mark Rivers, shared a heartfelt message about his son, portraying him as a devoted husband and father. “He took his role as a police officer to heart,” Mark wrote. “He was a proud father of seven, with the youngest just 7 years old. His love for his family was boundless. He joined the police force later in life, at age 40, as he sought a more stable role, and was training to be a drone operator to minimize risk to his loved ones.”
On social media, a woman claiming to be Officer Rivers’ sister expressed her profound grief, stating, “My heart is shattered. Words can’t capture the beauty of his spirit, and this loss is devastating for so many. Fly high, dear brother. You always aspired to be a pilot (darn color blindness). Soar.”
Officer Rivers became the sixth officer in the Boulder Police Department’s history to die in the line of duty, and the first since 1994, according to local reports. As his body was transported from the site of the shooting to a nearby funeral home, emergency vehicles formed a procession, and first responders stood in salute along Table Mesa Road.
