Candace Owens Is Not the Right Choice

It was a late-night scroll through social media that introduced me to Candace Owens. Why should you be aware of her? Because her inflammatory rhetoric has the potential to harm us all, regardless of race or circumstance. And while figures like former President Donald Trump also spread divisive messages, Owens is eyeing a presidential run in 2024.

At first glance, Candace presents herself as an attractive Black woman with a fierce demeanor. However, once she speaks, her words often reveal ignorance. A quick visit to her Twitter account will confirm this—just be cautious; you might feel your intelligence waning.

A glance at her Wikipedia page might make you feel nauseous. She’s labeled a conservative author, commentator, and so-called activist. According to Webster’s Dictionary, an activist is someone who campaigns for political or social change. However, if you read her tweets or follow her supporters, the type of “change” she advocates for is concerning.

Among her most troubling statements came in a Facebook video I stumbled upon months ago, which some of my own friends supported with their shocking comments. This was just after George Floyd’s murder, and Owens claimed, “There was so much pressure for me to go with the popular opinion about who George Floyd was. We are being sold a lot of lies at the detriment to the Black community, at the detriment to the white community, and at the detriment to America as a whole. Our culture is unique from other communities because we are the only community that caters to the bottom denominator of our society. Not every Black American is a criminal. Not every Black American is committing crimes. But we are unique in that we are the only people that fight and scream and demand support for the people in our community that are up to no good.”

Every single one of her statements deserves an eye roll. I’d classify Candace as someone who is indeed “up to no good.”

The prospect of Candace Owens running for president is alarming. She has tapped into the ease with which many Americans can be swayed by her rhetoric. Republicans adore her because she fits neatly into their narrative as one of the few Black individuals who aligns with their views.

Owens professes her love for America but seems intent on undermining the very people who have contributed to its foundation. Her reckless speech and clear disdain for Black communities are evident. Her views, which have been laid out in detail by various commentators, include the notion that Black individuals should not be concerned about white nationalism and that transgender individuals have “a disorder.”

Owens does not embody the characteristics of someone who genuinely cares for her country. If she truly did, her words would promote unity rather than division. I wouldn’t trust her leadership, nor would I trust the former President. It’s time for the American public to awaken to the reality that we’ve been misled. Candace Owens is not the leader we need, not in 2024, 2028, or anytime in the future. Just think about how she would interact with foreign leaders or what her contributions to global health organizations would look like—yikes!

Candace is squandering the platform she has, which isn’t very strong to begin with. She needs to recognize that, despite her white spouse, she is still a Black woman. Her polished appearance and ability to push the right buttons to gain favor with the Republican party don’t guarantee her a nomination as their presidential candidate. One would hope that the Republican party has learned the dangers of extreme, incendiary rhetoric, especially in the wake of the January 6th Capitol Riots. Words can either hurt or heal, and unfortunately, her words tend to cause harm. I will never support Candace Owens, and I hope others feel the same.
