In a heartfelt message, Jonathan Van Ness is calling on members of the HIV+ community to check their state’s COVID-19 vaccine eligibility. The star of “Queer Eye” posted a photo of himself receiving the vaccine to inspire others to do the same.
Van Ness shared vital information on Instagram regarding vaccine eligibility for individuals with pre-existing conditions, including HIV+. He mentioned, “In New York, where I’m working, the vaccine program has expanded to cover those with pre-existing conditions, and being HIV+ qualifies you for vaccination. If you’re HIV+, please verify your state’s guidelines to see if you can get vaccinated against COVID-19!”
In 2019, Van Ness candidly revealed his HIV status to The New York Times, explaining his decision to share such a personal aspect of his life. “When Queer Eye came out, it was tough because I wondered if I should discuss my status. But with the way the Trump administration was stigmatizing the LGBT community, I felt compelled to speak out.” He emphasized the importance of addressing such serious topics, saying, “You’re never too broken to be fixed.”
With more vulnerable populations now eligible for the COVID vaccine, it’s crucial for HIV+ individuals to stay informed. Depending on the state, some may already be able to receive the vaccine, like those in New York, where Van Ness got his shot. “Every state has different guidelines, so be sure to investigate yours,” he advised.
He also stressed the importance of persistence in the search for vaccine appointments. “If I hadn’t been checking online daily, I might have missed the opportunity. Stay engaged in your search for information,” he said. After his first dose, he reported only minor soreness in his arm and looks forward to his second shot in a few weeks.
Van Ness concluded by encouraging everyone to assist others in obtaining necessary information and access. “If you can help someone else with their search, please do so,” he urged.
