We’ve all encountered those individuals with exaggerated pouts posing for the camera, or those asking for complimentary products in exchange for a shoutout. There are countless people navigating the world of social media, hoping to be their own boss and live the dream. It’s possible, provided you put in the effort. Take my husband, who goes by The Grill Master. He has gathered nearly a million followers across his social media channels, and it all began with a worn-out grill in our backyard. It’s honestly quite strange.
The Journey Begins
The journey began shortly after our first child was born. What started as a small blog to earn a bit of extra money has transformed into a full-fledged career. However, it hasn’t been easy. He’s spent countless nights perfecting recipes and has braved the cold to cook ribs while streaming live on Facebook and Instagram. Meanwhile, my four kids and I are sent to the upper floor to ensure we remain out of sight from his audience. Quiet is a must when he’s filming. Often, he promises a homemade dinner, but it takes hours to get the perfect shot, so I end up serving pizza rolls while the kids eat on the floor. His mantra is, “The camera pays the bills; the camera eats first.” Eye roll.
A Unique Persona
He has cultivated a unique persona for his work. He travels worldwide to attend events with some of the biggest names in barbeque, dressing exclusively in flame-themed clothing. I’m not joking. He owns suits, jackets, and attire covered in flames. And these aren’t from discount websites; they’ve cost him hundreds of dollars, which he claims are business expenses and tax deductions. He has flame-themed socks, shoes, ties, shirts, sweatshirts, and even swim trunks. The only piece of clothing missing is flame-covered boxer briefs, but he just hasn’t found them yet. He truly embodies the Grill Master. It’s his identity—constantly. Once, he wore a flame jacket to our children’s school auction, and I must admit, he looked quite dashing. But I drew the line at the pants—half a clown suit is more than enough.
Recognition and Fame
As the man draped in flames, he’s memorable. People recognize him easily, and if you saw his attire, you wouldn’t forget it. A while back, he was frequently appearing on local television to promote his blog, long before the flame suits became his signature. One morning, while we were having breakfast in a busy restaurant, a man approached our table and said, “Oh wow. You’re the Grill Master. Can I have your autograph?” I was in shock. How wild is that? We live in St. Louis, where people usually chase after local celebrities. But my husband? That was unexpected.
The Production Studio
To achieve this level of success, you need the right environment to hone your skills. Our deck is enormous, and it was one of the reasons we chose this house. I envisioned a lovely area with bright cushions and a matching umbrella for relaxing with my Diet Coke on a beautiful spring day. Instead, he constructed a roofed grill corral that resembles a production studio. It features special lighting, photographers, videographers, and even a production assistant. This can take all day or sometimes an entire weekend, all to showcase what those grills can do. Currently, there are seven grills out there! Seven! Smokers, gas grills, and even a massive rotisserie that could fit a whole hog. There are three more in the garage waiting to be assembled. All these are clients’ grills, either paying him to cook on them or to manage their social media. He collaborates with people globally—Europe, Australia, and even Ocean Springs, Mississippi. He’s genuinely legit.
The American Dream
When this adventure began, I doubt anyone anticipated the level of success he would achieve. It’s like an American Dream story. Some days, it’s hard to believe; it feels as though we are living in an alternate reality. When people ask what he does, I often wince. Saying your husband is a social media influencer sounds so cliché, doesn’t it? Anyone can try to do that, right? But for him, it’s genuine. He lives it every day, working harder than anyone with a traditional nine-to-five. It’s bizarre yet incredibly cool. And the next time we go out for a fancy dinner, I’ll proudly stand beside him, looking like he’s on fire. Who knows, I might even find myself a flaming hot clutch to accompany the outfit.
