In November 2020, the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center shared the delightful story of this little Saw-whet owl, the smallest owl species in the northeast. After the 75-foot Norway spruce was cut down in Oneonta—about 80 miles southwest of Albany and 170 miles from its final destination—this little guy was discovered nestled within the iconic tree.
Ravensbeard Wildlife Center recounted how they were contacted about the owl’s rescue. “I received a call asking if we rehabilitate owls. After a brief pause, the caller said, ‘OK, I’ll ring back when my husband arrives home with the baby owl in a box,’” the post explained.
Having traveled without food or water, the owl needed immediate care. “At Ravensbeard, we’ve given him fluids and are feeding him all the mice he can eat,” the post continued. “He appears to be in good condition, and once he gets a check-up from the vet, he will be released to continue his wild adventures.”
Unsurprisingly, the internet has fallen for this charming little creature, especially as he holds a special place in the somewhat sad-looking Rockefeller tree. He’s even been affectionately named Rockefeller!
Ravensbeard later provided an update post-vet visit, confirming that he received a clean bill of health and is expected to be released soon. They expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the owl’s rescue: “A big thank you to all those behind the scenes. Great job in saving ‘Rockefeller!’”
