Dear Mr. President,
As a suburban woman, I find myself within the demographic you actively seek to persuade. However, I cannot support you, and I won’t. Here are ten reasons why:
- I don’t need you to safeguard my neighborhood. I’m more concerned about the openly racist attitudes you’ve emboldened around me than any alleged “urban” threat from outside.
- I don’t need you to defend our country’s heritage. I’m far more troubled by a nation that refuses to confront its historical wrongs than by the idea of reevaluating a legacy that shouldn’t have been celebrated to begin with.
- I don’t need you to help my husband find work. This isn’t the 1950s, and I’m not living in a sitcom. I want you to focus on controlling the pandemic so we can recover jobs lost by both men and women, especially since women have faced the brunt of job losses during COVID. (Shout out to all the entrepreneurial women out there!)
- I don’t need you to unilaterally decide when schools should reopen. I need a comprehensive national strategy for COVID testing and safety that allows schools to open and stay open without fear.
- I don’t need you to appoint a woman to the Supreme Court simply because of her gender. I want a justice who will uphold my reproductive rights and interpret the Constitution in a way that promotes equality and progress.
- I don’t need you to promise to protect pre-existing conditions with a mythical healthcare plan. I need you to stop dismantling the protections that already exist.
- I don’t need you to be as eloquent as past leaders. I want you to stop your misogynistic rhetoric toward women who challenge you, as it sets a poor example for my son and teaches my daughter to accept disrespect.
- I don’t need you to act as a scientist or medical expert. I need you to be a leader who listens to the experts.
- I don’t need you to sugarcoat the truth for me. I need honest communication, not platitudes meant to downplay legitimate concerns.
- I don’t need you to point fingers at others for your failures – whether it’s Obama, Hillary, or anyone else. As women, we know that playing the blame game is unhelpful. It’s time to set aside grievances and focus on effective governance.
Given your unwillingness to meet these needs, my vote is firmly out of reach. So, no, Mr. President, despite your efforts, I won’t be supporting you.
Sincerely,
A Suburban Woman Saying No
