According to GoHawaii.com, Hawaii only accepts test results from an FDA-authorized nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) conducted at one of its “Trusted Testing and Travel Partners.” Unfortunately for the Alexander family, although they tested negative, their chosen testing location was not on the approved list, resulting in their being sent back home.
Pam Alexander expressed her disbelief to KUTV, stating, “This just blew us away, how they treated us.” The family had checked the list of approved testing sites prior to their trip but were frustrated to find the nearest one was located in Las Vegas. Rather than adjusting their plans, they sought guidance from Utah officials, who suggested they could get tested locally. However, upon arrival in Maui, they were informed by gate agents that their test did not meet Hawaii’s requirements.
Robb Alexander lamented, “They just said it’s not on our approved list and so we can’t let you in.” It seems that while Hawaiian officials clearly outlined the rules, the family chose to disregard them in favor of alternative advice. Consequently, they were forced to return to Utah, vowing never to visit Hawaii again. While tourism is crucial for Hawaii’s economy, the state’s strict measures ensure the safety of its residents and visitors during the ongoing pandemic.
